A Network Technology degree from Flint Hills Technical College prepares students for a career in the dynamic and high-demand IT industry. Students will develop skills through hands-on training to build, install, maintain and repair computers and computer networks.

After serving 22 years in the Air Force, FHTC gave me the opportunity to start a new career in a field I really enjoy, network technology.

Program Options

Network Technology offers an associate of applied science degree option. High school seniors and juniors are also eligible to apply to this program.

The Network Technology associate of applied science degree is a two-year program that contains technical and general education courses. Graduates will develop the professional knowledge and skills needed to establish, maintain, manage and secure computer networks and provide computer user support. In addition, graduates are prepared to take CompTIA, Linux Professional Institute, Microsoft, and Cisco certification exams. These skills and certifications will prepare them for immediate employment in the field of computer and IT network support and administration.

Career Opportunities

Network technicians may work within an organization or for a computer support company, and usually maintain offices but are rarely confined to them. As networks expand, more work, including technical support, can be done from remote locations. As the availability of virtually all aspects of a business become digital, network technicians are also increasingly planning, coordinating, and implementing network security. Hardware and software vendors, telephone companies, state and federal governments, and colleges and universities are among the top employers.

Adam received his Associate of Applied Science in Electronics Technology degree from FHTC in 1994. That same year, he began his career at FHTC as technical support for the college’s computers and networks and teaching classes for the Electronics Technology program. In 1998, Adam became a full-time instructor and FHTC’s Network Engineer. He holds numerous certifications and licensures including Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+, March 2000; CompTIA Network+, March 2001; Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Level 1 Certification, March 2002; Certified Novell Administrator, March 2000; Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator License, Feb 1992; Kansas State Board of Education – Certification in Electronics, Fall 1994.

In 2012, he began his career at FHTC in the IT department and oversaw the installation of the network infrastructure in the college’s downtown campus. Kyle became a Network Technology instructor in 2014 and a full-time faculty member in 2015.

FHTC students who complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in Network Technology may be eligible to utilize a 2+2 agreement with the following institutions to further their education.
